They Don't Make a 12-Step Program for This
assembled @ 11:31 a.m. on 2004-05-12

Hello, my name is Carrie, and I'm a fiber junkie. Since I started working at the shop, I've been fascinated with spinning. Yes, spinning, like with a wheel, making yarn. Like in Sleeping Beauty. That kind of spinning, not just twirling around in circles until I fall down, which seems to happen at my house quite enough, thank you. Finally, this past Saturday, there was another beginning spinning class, and Joan, lovely lady that she is, said that I could sit in on it, even though I was supposed to be working. This first class started with the drop spindle, and I just didn't get it. Of course, I had to stop and get up every time a customer came in, so that didn't help, but I made some god-awful yarn folks. Not even yarn. More like stuff that birds wouldn't even want for building nests. It was bad, and I was frustrated almost to tears. But in doing my homework today, I suddenly just.. got it. Like riding a bike, I couldn't explain it to you. All of a sudden, my fingers know what to do next, and my singles (a "single" strand to be later plied with others) are transforming from a thick, lumpy, corkscrewed mess, to thin, almost delicate strands. There are still a lot of rough spots, but I've got the basics, and I'm thrilled. My fingers are in love with spinning, and I think that I'll love using the wheel even more. The only problem I see at the moment is that I "got it" halfway through my last bunch of roving. But there is a bucketful of dryer lint in the laundry room....

Heh. You all think I'm kidding, don't you? I told you I'm an addict.

The amusing thing -- to me anyhow -- about my addiction, is that I seem to be moving backwards. I took up knitting, and then dyeing natural yarn, and now I want to make yarn, dye it, then knit it. Next would be raising an animal, just for fiber, but Hero says he's not going to be shoveling alpaca shit. Maybe an angora rabbit? (They're cute, too). Hey... where are those cats....
