Sprout's really getting the hang of sucking his thumb. It's the cutest thing to see that little fist with the tiny thumb poking out, like a miniature Arthur Fonzarelli, and then he wraps his fingers around his little round nose as he sucks away. I'm of two minds about this habit. My sister was a thumbsucker, and I remember my mom's great battle to break the habit. Red finally gave up the thumb when my mom bribed her with a Benji doll. On the other hand, it's one of the cutest things you'll ever see, my little guy sleeping soundly with his thumb in his mouth. That alone wouldn't do it for me, but there's the whole self-soothing aspect of it: he wouldn't have to rely on us to give him a pacifier when he's fussing, and he just wants something to suck on. (You would not believe how I agonized over that sentence, wanting to avoid any hits from pr0n-seekers). Not that I want him to take care of himself at 1 month old, I'm just thinking that he would be happier with the immediate gratification aspect of things. (Hah. Wouldn't we all?) So one could say that thumbsucking is empowering. Yeah, I like that view.
